BBC Makes the Shift to the WebIn his latest blog post, consultant and CEO of WOMMA Governing Member Edelman, Richard Edelman, discusses his breakfast with Richard Sambrook, the man tagged to migrate BBC from its television dominance to what BBC hopes will be online dominance. Using the examples of the New York Times and the Guardian, Sambrook explained to Edelman the updates that the BBC has already made, and its observations about the online world. Sambrook points out the ever-increasing popularity of news video, the need for regional-specific content, and the desire from viewers for “raw and direct” video, the antithesis of overproduced television news.

Facebook Loyalists Create a New Facebook GroupIf 0.7% of your customers said they hate you, would you take notice? This is exactly what has occurred on Facebook, however, that percentage translates into 700,000 Facebook users. Why the revolt? Facebook loyalists simply hate the new layout. So much so that they have created a “I Hate the New Facebook” group. This begs the question; is there an “I Love The New Facebook” group?

Give It Up for Web 2.0
While social media and Web 2.0 are not a replacement for management decision-making, Web 2.0 is challenging the traditional “controlled” management style towards a more “collaborative” environment. Managers are no longer the only clever people in the room anymore. The room is much bigger and it is speckled with cleverness. To manage in the Web 2.0 world is to converse, to listen, to be honest and upfront, to collaborate, to moderate, and constantly watch out for the trends and patterns.

What is Old is New Again, and Then Old Again
Whoopsie! Highlighting a potential peril about how information travels in the modern world, a nearly 6-year-old article circulating on the Internet as breaking news about United Airlines caused a brief 75% drop in the airline’s stock. The story, originally published Dec. 10, 2002, had investors panicked over the notion that Chicago-based United had again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

I Spy a Social Network
Yes, believe it or not, the United States government is actually testing an intelligence agency social networking system, called A-Space. Currently only NSA, FBI, and CIA are experimenting with the service, but up to sixteen US intelligence agencies may one day take part. A-Space is slated to be used for sharing information on terrorist troop movements and general terrorist activity.

Band Leader Says He Depends on Piracy
Steve Knightley, half of the British acoustic duo “Show of Hands” gave an interview to TorrentFreak recently in which he spoke quite extensively about music piracy, the music industry, and how his band depends immensely on music “sharing.” Knightley makes the point that music piracy doesn’t prevent people from being fans, and that most individuals will end up paying for concert tickets and albums, once they know and like a band. “I believe the official term is ‘viral marketing’,” says Steve, “and we depend utterly upon it.”

The Future of Social Media: Hope Or Hype?
A recent conversation has me thinking about the future of social media as an industry and a business application. I think the future of social media is bright, but I think we have a hard road a head. The essential logic is that new technologies have an explosion of hype that soon turns to a massive free fall as early-adopting businesses fail to see the promised profits or productivity improvement. Then a period of recuperation occurs where businesses begin to see realistic and long-term benefits from the technology. At that point it begins to find its way to the mainstream and blends to become part of the accepted business approach.

Online Travel Tips Trump Traditional Print Guides
World travelers and vacationers alike ditch print and head to the web. Websites such as TripAdvisor, where people leave independent reviews and opinion, have overtaken the more traditional Lonely Planet-style guides. Word of mouth reviews and ratings provide real time, real life experience over stale and dated print publications.
